About Mona

A versatile musician, Mona’s varied orchestral, chamber music, and solo performance career has taken her to concert halls throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe, including Symphony Hall (Boston), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), the National Center for the Performing Arts (Beijing, China), and Musiikkitalo (Helsinki, Finland). She has performed with the Olympic Ballet Theater Orchestra, Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, and is currently a substitute flutist for the New World Symphony. She particularly enjoys performing chamber works, taking part in recording projects, and transcribing shakuhachi pieces for transverse flute.

Mona was the prize winner of the Coeur d’Alene Young Artist Competition and was a featured soloist with the Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra in 2015. She has been a finalist in the University of Washington Concerto Competition and the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival Concerto Competition. She has performed all over the country, as well as in Canada, China, Finland, Italy, and Japan.

Celebrated for her entrepreneurial spirit, Mona received New England Conservatory’s competitive Entrepreneurial Musicianship grant to support her role as the Music Director of the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project in rural India. She was also the recipient of the Spark Award, another Entrepreneurial Musicianship department grant, which helped her transcribe and notate traditional shakuhachi pieces for the transverse flute, a project which she premiered in Mibu, Japan in 2024.

Equally comfortable with challenging academic pursuits, Mona applied for and was awarded the highly competitive J. William Fulbright Scholarship, which allowed her to continue her education at the Sibelius Academy in Finland. Here she researched the differences in musical training curricula between Finland and the United States, with a focus on available resources for injury prevention, a topic to which she dedicates much of her time.

Passionate about advocating for accessible music education, Mona actively seeks opportunities to engage with underserved communities, ensuring that every student has the chance to explore their musical potential. This has led her to undertake music outreach programs in far reaching places like Costa Rica and India.

Mona has a Master of Music degree and Graduate Diploma from New England Conservatory. She continued her education at the Sibelius Academy in Finland on the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Primary teachers include Diane Slater and Paula Robison. Additional studies with Zart Dombourian-Eby, Elizabeth Rowe, and Petri Alanko.

Flute Lessons

A passionate teacher, Mona welcomes students of all ages and abilities into her studio. Lessons are structured around the student’s goals, whether to play professionally or as a hobby. Stylistic choices in musical expression and phrasing are taught by incorporating music theory, music history, and ear-training skills into lessons. Students learn to produce a beautiful tone and to express themselves freely.

As an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher, Mona firmly believes that the psychophysical mechanism is paramount to success in healthy music-making. Lessons will incorporate many elements from this technique to help students practice efficiently, prevent and/or alleviate repetitive stress injuries, overcome performance anxiety, and perform confidently.
